HAIDA'S SUPPORTERS

newlogo_300pixel.jpg

We are very fortunate to have HMCS HAIDA preserved in Canada. She:

• is the last survivor of the twenty-seven Tribal Class destroyers, thirteen of which, including HMCS ATHABASKAN, were lost during the Second World War;
• sank more surface tonnage than any other Canadian ship during that conflict and consequently is known as Canada’s “fightingest” ship;
• is one of only three remaining of the over four hundred Canadian warships from the Second World War, a time when Canada’s navy was the third largest in the world;
• is the only survivor of the eight Canadian warships that served during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953; and
• along with HMCS SACKVILLE, is one of two former Canadian warships designated as Naval Memorials and worthy of passing honours from ships of the current fleet.

Friends of H.M.C.S HAIDA is a registered charitable organization formed in 1989.  While we work cooperatively with Parks Canada to assist in the preservation and maintenance of H.M.C.S. HAIDA as a historic ship, naval memorial and a national historic site, we receive no government funding and rely entirely on memberships and donations from Canadians who believe, as we do, that preserving Canada’s naval history and heritage is important.

• Our volunteers work together with Parks Canada staff in maintenance and restoration projects onboard and serve as docents, helping visitors with questions, explanations and stories and generally helping to bring the ship to life.

• We run educational programmes including school visits and seek to encourage the interest of youth and cadet groups in the ship and to make their visits meaningful.

• We strive promote the use of the ship as a Naval Memorial by our participation in the annual ATHABASKAN Memorial service and other events throughout the year.

• We work to preserve naval traditions and to build links between the current Canadian Navy and its past through ship visits and outreach to the fleet

If you have the opportunity, we would encourage you to visit the ship.  If you care about the future of the ship and its long term preservation and would like to help us in our work, please show your support in the form of a tax deductible membership or donation to Friends of H.M.C.S. HAIDA . We must ensure that this important cornerstone of Canadian naval history is available for future generations.
